In 2019, when our collaboration with The Exchange Citizen Advisory Group and residents at 'Harbour House' began, we began having conversation about what the word 'addiction' meant. Members of The Exchange expressed that it would be helpful to have a 'wallet-sized definition' of addiction to orient us as we began the project and continued our discussions. However, while we attempted to neatly define the concept of 'addiction', we couldn't seem to do so. We continued to revisit this topic as a group throughout the course of this project, and invited broader community input. What is pictured is a series of 'definitions' and illustrations of 'addiction' as it is understood and experienced by the community of older adults at 'Harbour House'. Some of the words and images are hand-drawn by the community members themselves, while others are illustrated by visual artist Greg Doble.
